I have taken a couple of classes, one while I was in college and the other that was a continuing education class offered by the university in the town where we were living at the time. There are lots of helpful books on photography, but one of the best things you can do is just practice, practice, practice. I look at other people's pictures a lot, too, to get ideas for poses, lighting, etc. It helps to have a good camera (mine is a Canon digital Rebel), although you really can take good pictures even with a cheap camera-- I've had some taken with a disposable film camera before that turned out pretty great, actually!
