A ceiba tree, native to Honduras. The Mayan priests used to pull off the thorns and pierce their ears, tounges, and "other parts" as a part of their blood ritual.
The guide (guy in the cowboy hat) was our guide through the park. He's been there a while giving tours. He told us that he once was the guide for Spencer W. Kimball, that will tell you how long he's been doing this.
This was one of the alters that the Mayans used for human sacrifice. You can see the grooves carved in to aid in the dispersment of a certain liquid.
Becca just realized why the top half of the alter is darker than the bottom.
(hint: it has to do with the liquid that the grooves are for)
